Bedrocks for Volunteers

Explore how to serve as a volunteer or how to use volunteers more effectively in your team.

Do you…

  • volunteer or work as a classroom assistant in your English language class?
  • have volunteers working with you and you would like ideas to help you work together more effectively?

The session will be interactive and practical, helping you to explore ways to make your class the place you dream it could be – a really positive learning environment.

You can explore how to work with small groups or individuals, how to support each other and take away ideas and techniques to use with your learners.

  • Rachel Thake

Rachel put her toes in the EFL/ESOL waters, teaching as a CMS volunteer for two years in Kenya. She returned with two life-changing discoveries: firstly that teaching is her vocation and secondly with a soon-to-be-husband as a permanent “souvenir”. Since then she has taught in a wide range of contexts – from toddlers to 80+, from Derby to Chiang Mai, from Nepal to China.

She currently works at Reading University, teaching minority- ethnic, Chinese teachers of English as well as CELTA courses in Reading. She volunteers once a week in her church-run English class and is currently part of the team writing materials for 2:19.

Her life in ESOL can be summed up in the words of Fredierick Buechner: “Your vocation in life is where your greatest joy meets the world’s greatest need.”
